The Efficicy of Oral Terbinafine in the Treatment of Tinea Pedis

Abstract
In this open trial, a new orally active antifunga agent, terbinafine was used in the treatment of tinea pedis. Thirty adults over the age of 18 years with symptoms and signs of tinea pedis and positive potassium hydroxide wet mount were treated with terbinafine, 250mg, one a day for 2 weeks.
All patients finished the study medications and were available for evaluation of efficacy and side effects at follow-up 3 weeks later. At 5 weeks, 24 out of 30 patients(80%) were mycologically negative(microscopy and culture). The clinical symptom improved significantly from the first week of therapy and had improved continuously by the time of the end of study. Overall efficacy assessed by the investigator and patient was evaluated as more than good in 87% of patients by both of then, and overall tolerability were evaluated as more than good in 100% and 97% of patients respectively.
In conclusion, oral gerbinafine is efective and safe in the short-term(2 weeks) treatment of tinea pedis.
